Bystander

Bystander by Wren Brian

In a militarized country in the middle of a war, a brash officer carrying a secret message asks to stay the night at a fearful citizen’s house. The citizen is shocked by this odd request, but does not dare to say no. As the officer makes themselves at home, the citizen starts to relax, and even enjoy the officer’s company. Small talk turns to joking and banter over drinks as they talk of happier times and partake in drunken philosophy. However, the citizen can’t keep playing along after secretly reading the message and being horrified by what it says.

Anomie

Anomie by Wren Brian

Two people struggle against each other and the empty space they’re trapped in to find a way out. Not knowing how or why they ended up in an “abyss”, the two search for meaning and understanding in their existence and in their relationship. Riffing on absurdism and existentialism (and not without a dash of humour), this play explores how we deny and deal with meaninglessness.

Winner of the 2017 Harry S. Rintoul Award for Best New Manitoba Play at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival and companion piece to Animosity.

Animosity

Animosity by Wren Brian

In this absurdist/existentialist play two people struggle with feelings of fear, disconnection, and anger at each other, the space, and themselves. With no memory of who they are or who they are to each other, they have to confront how and why people come to hate each other, as well as how to move forward.

This is a companion piece to Anomie.

A Fine Line

A Fine Line by Wren Brian

Set out of time and place, four friends and those around them struggle to cope with increasing conflict taking over their country. As their world is turned upside down they are forced to confront who they are in the face of harsh new realities. As one turns to the military, the others grow increasingly cautious of the rights being taken in the name of safety and fluctuate between denial and impulsive action. As the turmoil drags on and desperation kicks in they must decide what parts of themselves they will and will not sacrifice in the pursuit of freedom and justice.

Situation

Situation by Wren Brian

This play is a complicated and nuanced look into the situations of several people who are dealing with workplace sexual harassment, but do not realize it. What is at first annoying, awkward and weird slowly grows into being detrimental to the employees’ health, but they don’t know what to do. On top of that, their employers aren’t sure what to do either. When do you take further steps? What do those look like? How do you make it stop?
